The Wesmen head coach from 1982 to 1989, Unruh oversaw saw two of the men's volleyball program's 10 national titles. 

Recognized as a high-level athlete and coach, Unruh helped the Wesmen to back-to-back national titles in 1986 and 1987, and was named the national coach of the year in '86. He was inducted into the Volleyball Manitoba Hall of Fame in 2015.
