MVB: Wesmen win streak meets abrupt end

EDMONTON — A Wesmen win streak came to an end in a rematch of the Canada West championship.

The Winnipeg Wesmen men's volleyball team was held to a season-low .051 attacking and dropped a 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-23) decision to the Alberta Golden Bears Friday night.

It was the first meeting between the teams since Winnipeg defeated the Bears in the Canada West championship match last spring.

Yet despite having their worst attacking night in over three years, the Wesmen were nevertheless in every set. They led 20-15 in the first set before Alberta put together a five-point run and went ahead again at 22-20 only to see the Bears tear off three straight.

They held a 21-20 lead in Set 2 but Alberta responded with a five-point run to set point. And, in Set 3, they battled back from down 24-20 to within a point before the Golden Bears finished the match.

Luke Lodewyks had six kills and six digs to lead the Wesmen (8-7) who fell to sixth place in the conference, the last position that earns a first-round bye in the 10-team post-season.

Matt Shand's 14 kills paced Alberta, which improved to 9-4.

Winnipeg's attacking percentage was the lowest since hitting -.071 in a three-set loss to Brandon in December 2022.
