A win streak has led the Winnipeg Wesmen into first place in their division.
Alberto Gordo scored a career-high 30 points and the Wesmen men's basketball team dominated the Regina Cougars 90-64 in a Canada West clash Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.
The Wesmen win, coupled with Alberta's loss to Manitoba Friday in Edmonton, has Winnipeg in sole possession of first place in the Prairie Division with seven games to play. Winnipeg (10-3) Â is one game ahead of Alberta and two clear of the Bisons.Â
For the third straight game, Gordo flirted with a triple-double grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing out a season-high seven assists. Gordo — who made 12 of 17 from the field and 4-for-7 from three —has scored in double digits in eight straight games and, over the past three conference contests, has averaged 20 points, 11 rebounds and 6.3 assists.
Elijah Mensah scored 21 points off the bench, adding six rebounds and six assists as one of four Wesmen who logged at least 30 minutes.Â
But with a lead that stretched to as many as 28, the Wesmen were nevertheless able to get all 13 players on the floor as they stretched their conference win streak over Regina to seven straight. It was the largest margin of victory for the Wesmen over the Cougars since a 112-68 victory at the Duckworth Centre, Jan. 11, 1997.Â
Ryan Luke had 13 points and seven rebounds and
Kato Jaro had 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists.Â
The Wesmen blew the game open with a 15-0 run midway through the second quarter that pushed their lead to 43-23.Â
A Gordo three with 2:12 left in the fourth quarter gave the Wesmen a 28-point edge.Â
Kaz Dornstauder led the way for Regina with 18 points. Gurech Gurech scored 15 and Sufyan Elkannan added 10.Â
