SASKATOON — The Winnipeg Wesmen lost a marathon Saturday and suffered their first weekend sweep in nearly two years.
The Wesmen men's volleyball team rallied for an extra-points win in the fourth set, but the Saskatchewan Huskies prevailed in a tight fifth to take a 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 25-15, 26-28, 15-12) Canada West conference victory.
The loss, which was Winnipeg's fourth straight, dropped the Wesmen to 2-4 ahead of a weekend series at home against Calgary next weekend.
Jaxon Rose set a career-high with 22 kills to lead the Wesmen. He also hit .347 and had three aces with four digs. Rose is tied for sixth in the country with 3.70 kills per set.
Aidan Hruska added 10 kills for the Wesmen, who hit .250 for the match but couldn't consistently slow a Huskies attack that finished with a .450 hitting percentage.
The fourth set was a thrilling back and forth in which the Wesmen held a five-point lead early, watched the Huskies chip away, and then had the two teams playing side-out volleyball after the 17-point mark.
Rose's kill gave the Wesmen a 27-26 advantage and then an Isaiah Mamer attack error secured the set and forced the fifth.
In Set 5, the Wesmen led 7-5 and found themselves tied at 11. But Saskatchewan scored four of the next five points to put it away.
Emmett Graham had a match-high 32 kills for the Huskies, while Mathieu Methot added 16 and Mamer 15.
